Best Engine Crane Overall: Partsam Electric Hoist Crane

The Partsam Electric Hoist Crane has enough power to lift any common gas engine on the market, it has a long cable that’ll work well in professional shops, and it’s compact and affordable which makes it a great option for home garages as well. Electric overhead cranes are the most convenient method of engine removal, and we think this Partsam Crane provides the perfect combination of power and usability that most auto workers need no matter if they’re professionals or DIY enthusiasts.

This crane’s 1320 pound weight capacity is available when both cable lines are hooked into place. That 19-foot double line can be doubled to a 38-foot single line when both hooks are not needed, and the single line is capable of lifting 660 pounds. Lifting speed is purposefully slow and controlled with a maximum speed of 33 feet per minute when using a single line, and that speed is reduced to 16 feet per minute when both lines are in use.  Both cables are comprised of zinc-coated anti-rotate steel wires. The crane’s power is produced by a 1.7hp electric motor.

A remote control is attached to the crane via a five-foot cable tether. The remote can be used to control the up and down motions of the crane, and it also features an emergency shutoff switch. For additional safety, a limit switch has been fixed to the crane that automatically shuts off the motor when the cable has been reeled in at a certain height. Two lift slings are included with purchase to make lifting unwieldy items easier. Users have lauded this crane for its reliability and strength. Check out our other top picks if you need an even stronger crane.

Partsam Electric Hoist Crane Key Features:

  • 1320 pound weight capacity
  • 38-foot single line cable, 19-foot double line
  • 5-foot tethered remote control

Best Hydraulic Engine Crane: CLIENSY 2 Ton Folding Engine Hoist

Best Hydraulic Engine Crane
CLIENSY 2 Ton Folding Engine Hoist
Low profile legs, rotating caster wheels, and a telescoping boom arm make the CLIENSY 2 Ton Folding Engine Hoist a versatile floor crane.

When mobility and strength are your biggest concerns, the CLIENSY 2 Ton Folding Engine Hoist is your go-to engine crane. With a 4400-pound weight capacity with an eight-ton vertical ram backbone, this folding floor crane can lift essentially any gas engine and many smaller diesel engines. The telescoping boom has four different settings for different payload sizes, and it extends from 41.8 inches at its shorted to 63 inches at its fully extended length.

While its superb strength is certainly a selling feature, this hydraulic crane has been designed with convenience as another core pillar in its engineering. For instance, the low profile base legs stand four inches tall so that they can easily slide under most vehicles, including low-riding sports cars, without requiring a jack. Those same legs, along with the boom arm, fold away when the crane is not in use for compact storage. There are six fully rotating caster wheels along the base of this crane to give it excellent mobility in any direction, and four of those wheels remain useful when the crane is folded for storage so that you can easily move it to the best storage space.

That mobility remains intact when a heavy load is lifted as well. The crane can lift up to 105 inches and can be wheeled out of the way as needed. The frame is constructed of heavy gauge structural steel, and the eight-ton hydraulic ram, which has been polished and treated to reduce skiving and sinking, provides ample assistive power to your lifts. The lift is manually operated via a pump handle which is fitted with a comfortable rubber grip. You’ll be able to move around engines, axles, transmissions, and anything else you need with this robust floor crane.

CLIENSY 2 Ton Folding Engine Hoist Key Features:

  • 4400-pound weight capacity
  • 105-inch maximum lifting height
  • Boom extends from 41.8 to 63-inches
  • Eight-ton long vertical ram

Best Budget Engine Crane: BIG RED Torin Manual Hand Lift

Best Budget Engine Crane
BIG RED Torin Manual Hand Lift
Durable and easy to operate, the BIG RED Torin Manual Hand Lift is a strong and dependable budget alternative.

Essentially every manual chain crane is a budget-friendly alternative to overhead electric and hydraulic floor cranes, and the BIG RED Torin Manual Hand Lift is our favorite among them. We’re featuring the 4000-pound weight capacity version here, but if you follow the product link you will find that there are multiple variants with weight capacities ranging from 1000 to 10,000 pounds. Whatever size BIG RED you choose, we’re sure its the best manual hand lift in its class.

This model has a 10-foot chain made of 20Mn2 alloy steel with a black oxide finish that protects the chain from corrosion and grime. The load-sharing gears inside of the unit at the top BIG RED crane makes lifting heavy loads a piece of cake as your pulling power is multiplied many times over. Rollerball bearings ensure smooth motion of all rotating components. Two full-forged drop steel swivel hooks are included which can rotate a full 360-degrees while holding heavy loads without twisting or bending, and they have safety latch clasps to prevent slipping.

The steel hook design makes the installation of this overhead lift much easier than those that must be mounted in place. All you need is a secure cross beam to hook on to and you’re lift is ready to operate. That means this manual crane can travel from one garage to another, or even to an outside scaffolding, at a moment’s notice. Users say that the smooth operation of this manual crane is a welcome surprise and that the crane lifts slowly and steadily. The BIG RED Torin Manual Hand Lift comes backed b a one-year warranty.

Best Electric Engine Crane: Five Oceans Electric Overhead Crane

Best Electric Engine Crane
Five Oceans Electric Overhead Crane
The Five Oceans Electric Overhead Crane is a heavy-duty, fully electric overhead hoist controlled via remote control on a 20-foot tether.

Though our top overall pick is also an electric engine crane, the Five Oceans Electric Overhead Crane is stronger, longer, and has a more handy remote control. While we still believe our top choice is the best choice for the majority of engine workers out there, this heavy-duty alternative is the right choice for those who work on heavier engines in larger shops and want an electric crane. The 2200 pound weight capacity is capable of lifting almost any engine aside from large diesel engines, and the 39.4-foot cable length is appropriate for tall shops and garages.

That’s not to say that this overhead crane isn’t a fine choice for smaller garages as well, but it is capable of more than most home garages would likely need. That 39.4-foot single line galvanized steel cable can hoist 1100 pounds on its own at 33 feet per minute, and the 19.5-foot dual line setup can handle the full 2200 pound capacity at 16 feet per minute. The unit is powered by a fully-electric 1500-watt, 2hp motor.

Although its power and reach make this overhead crane a great option for tall workspaces like shops and barns, the fact that the remote control is on a 20-foot tether certainly makes this the best choice for tall spaces. Most other tethered remotes are cut short at five or ten feet. The long reach of the Five Oceans remote is definitely more convenient. We’re glad to see that this unit also has an automatic shutoff limiter switch, and the one-year warranty is a nice boon as well.

Five Oceans Electric Overhead Crane Key Features:

  • 2200 pound weight capacity
  • 20-foot tethered remote control
  • 39.4-foot wire cable
  • One-year warranty

Who Should Buy an Engine Crane

If you want to properly work on your vehicle’s engine and need to replace or remove it for any reason you need to purchase a quality engine crane. They’re the right tool for the job, and this is a task that you do not want to cut corners on. Overhead electric cranes are the easiest to operate and require nearly zero effort on your part to lift or lower an engine or any heavy object. Manual overhead and floor cranes are also fantastic options and require less effort than you would think thanks to the wonders of modern engineering. If you’re going to move a heavy component like your vehicle’s engine, you have to get an engine crane.

Once you’ve fixed your engine back into place, you’re going to need to make sure that the check engine light stays off. We can help you find the best OBD2 scanner for your garage to make that task easier. And while you’re moving things around you may notice that your car’s suspension is on its way out. If that’s the case you’ll want to take a look at our piece on the best shocks and struts.

Engine cranes are also useful in any number of applications. The cranes and hoists we’ve featured in this article can be used to move anything you need. Loading a trailer, removing the hardtop from your Jeep Wrangler, and putting a kayak on your roof are just a few of the additional ways these cranes can help make your life easier.

Important Features to Consider

There are a few important considerations to think through before purchasing an engine crane.

  • Floor or overhead crane. Overhead cranes have the benefit of being up and out of your way. They’re the best option for people who have the vertical space needed in their garage or shop for an overhead crane. Overhead cranes do require mounting hardware, however. They usually have mounting brackets included with the crane, but you will need to install a secure cross rail, cross joists, or another sturdy alternative to mount your overhead crane to. Floor cranes do not require any installation whatsoever, and they are infinitely more mobile than overhead cranes, but they do take up a lot of physical space even when they are folded up for storage. Floor cranes also have lifting height limitations based upon their boom length.
  • Overhead: electric or manual. If you’ve chosen to go overhead, you now need to decide whether a manual or electric hoist better suits your needs. Manual chain cranes are much more affordable than electric cranes. A manual crane is much easier to operate than they appear to be because your pulling power is multiplied many times over by the gearing, but it does require some physical ability and your hands or gloves may get covered in grease from the chains. Electric cranes can operate remotely with the push of a button, but they are much more expensive and less reliable overall due to the motor and the number of moving parts.
  • Weight capacity. This should be the first number you look at when considering a crane of any type. You’ll need to know exactly how much weight you plan to lift with the crane before you make a purchase. If your engine is likely to be the heaviest object you will want to lift you will want to research its weight so that you purchase a crane that is capable enough to lift it. It’s better to overshoot how much weight capacity you will need as a stronger crane will be more stable. You’ll want to avoid approaching any crane’s capacity if you can.
  • Lift length. This is more important for professional garages than it is for home DIY mechanics. The average home garage won’t have the vertical space to lift an engine more than a few feet before the ceiling gets in the way. If you do have the vertical space, though, be sure to choose a crane with the chain or cable length you require.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an engine crane and how does it work?

Engine cranes are heavy-duty hoisting tools that can be used to slowly and securely lift or lower an engine or almost any other heavy object. There are three primary types of engine cranes: overhead manual chain cranes, overhead electric cranes, and mobile hydraulic floor cranes. Each type can be found at different sizes and strengths, some of which are more ideal for home garages and others that are designed for professional or industrial use.

  • Overheard manual chain cranes are installed on a ceiling or mount above your vehicle and use a pulley system with a gear set to multiply your physical pulling power. To use this crane, you would pull on a non-load-bearing pull chain and that effort would be multiplied into the load-bearing lift chain that would then slowly raise the engine it is hooked up to.
  • Overhead electric cranes are also installed on a ceiling or high mount and are powered by an electric motor. They have specific weight limits that are determined by the chain strength and motor power. Electric cranes require no manual effort on your part and operate with the push of a button.
  • Mobile hydraulic floor cranes require no installation. They have wheels and extendable boom arms that make them an extremely mobile and versatile option, but they do take up more room than the overhead options. Many of these hydraulic cranes do fold away for more compact storage, but they can still be quite large. These are manually operated with a hand pump that is aided by hydraulics to lift the engine.

How much weight can an engine crane lift?

Each engine crane, no matter the type, has its own weight lifting capacity depending upon what the model specifies. We have featured a wide selection of engine cranes for you to browse that range in strength from 440-pound capacity up to 6000-pound capacity.

Can I rent an engine hoist?

There are tool rental shops that rent engine hoists, but renting a hoist crane can be expensive and cumbersome. Our research shows that rental prices are not far off from the purchase prices of the equipment. Folding engine cranes can be difficult to move to your location from a shop, and overhead hoists need to be installed properly in order to function safely. We recommend purchasing a hoist for these reasons.

How do you lift an engine without a crane?

Another method for removing an engine from a vehicle is to actually lift the body and frame of the vehicle with jacks after you have disconnected all engine components. You’ll want to place a heavy-duty rolling cart underneath the ending before you disconnect it. Once disconnected, you can jack up and raise the vehicle until the body is raised above the engine, then you can roll the engine out of the way and lower the vehicle back down. This process can be reversed to reinstall or replace the engine.
